Thanks & Giving


Happy Thanksgiving! I hope you are spending the time with family and eating yummy food. I thought I would post a couple of pictures of how my cake turned out! My grandma use to make this cake for me and soon it became my favorite. Baking the cake reminded me of my grandma and the love she put her in food and the care she took! No one can make this cake like hers but I would say this is damn close if not exact! I made this one to go to my MILs and I'm making one tonight for my coworkers. Hopefully they like it but at this point I don't care. I just am happy I can have a little something of grandma's to share!

Thanksgiving

Next week is Thanksgiving and I fully intend to embrace it. Typically I have a take-it or leave-it attitude towards Thanksgiving.  I love to cook and I love to eat- so why isn't it my favorite holiday? Could it be the forced family fun? Or the awkwardness of breaking bread with people you don't know? Or is the the slaving away in the kitchen for ungrateful people who pretend understand that you made the pie crust from scratch or that the cranberry sauce did NOT come from a can?

I think one of the major reasons Thanksgiving is not my favorite is because I have a huge fear of cooking for others. I cook for myself all the time. I enjoy the process and the product. It all starts when I prepare food for others. I grew up with people who cook very well, then I married a amateur chef. I get nervous cooking for such a elite audience. When I cook for my husband I become this annoyingly insecure person -asking him if it tastes good and is he sure that it is "alright." In four years I've never made anything he didn't like.

We recently had get-together at our new apartment. I decided I would make meatballs and my husband's favorite peanut butter and chocolate chips cookies. (He prepared the main dish and side dishes). I was really nervous making the meatballs. I wanted them to be perfect. I fretted (seriously) and checked every.single.detail. The meatballs turned out awesome. Everyone loved them and finished them off. In fact I should have made more. The peanut-butter cookies were crunchier than I preferred but people liked them. (I think they were lying).

Now we head into the potluck season. I elected to make a cake for the day-after-Thanksgiving potluck at my job. (I'm much more comfortable with making sweets than main dishes).  I will bravely bake a cake from scratch and pray that  it works out.  I don't want to be the person everyone talks about. Two years removed, people at my job still tell stories about a telltale hair in someone's side dish.

Girly Things

I know my style is different from many of the girls here. I'm (northern) California casual where they are East Coast Chic.  I'm also a tom-boy (which I know is code for lesbian nowadays but I mean it in the original sense of the word. I played sports, rode bikes, skateboarded, climbed trees, etc. I was just interested in typical "boy" things). Therefore things like fashion and handbags never interested me. I'm just starting to get into fashion even though I'm pretty "vanilla" with my look. (some of that has to do with never being "stick thin" and my self image but that's another post). I never got into purses. It seems like women are SOOOO into purses now. The more expensive the better. The more exclusive the better. The more initials the easier it is to show off.  I don't get it! I can't understand spending $300 for a bag to put stuff in! And I don't even have $300 in my wallet! I'm supposed to have a bag for all seasons, every occasion, and outfit. Whew! I can't keep up. Despite of all of this I have decided it is time for the to get a grown up purse. However I have rules. I want a small bag (I refuse to carry a suitcase on my arm). The max price I am willing to pay is: $80. (sorry folks I'm on a budget).  The bag can't be boring! I'm quirky, different so my bag should be as well.  I am open to your suggestions.
